REUTERS/Jose Cabezas El Salvador on Monday became the third Latin American country in the past two years to switch allegiances from Taipei to Beijing and said attracting investment and developing the economy were key goals behind the decision. “Although we recognize the sovereign right of every country to determine its diplomatic relations, we are deeply disappointed by this decision,” said a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, who did not want to be identified by name. “We are reviewing our relationship with El Salvador following this decision,” he said. The U.S. ambassador in El Salvador, Jean Manes, posted on Twitter earlier that the United States was analyzing the “worrisome” decision and that it would impact relations between the two countries. She also did not elaborate. U.S. relations with El Salvador have been strained over President Donald Trump’s threats to cut aid from countries that “do nothing” to stop MS-13 gang members from crossing illegally into the United States.

The early Great Plains had long been imagined as a vast empty space populated by nomadic tribes following buffalo herds. But if Blakeslee is right, at least some of the tribes were urban. They built large towns, raised crops, made fine pottery, processed bison on a massive scale and led a settled existence. There were trade connections all the way to the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan in Mexico. “So this was not some remote place. The people traded and lived in huge communities,” Blakeslee said.

Venezuela’s economy has been in steep decline and there are periodic waves of protests against the leftist government of President Nicolas Maduro. Maduro argues that he is the victim of a Washington-led “economic war” designed to sabotage his administration through sanctions and price-gouging. The chaos has forced many to flood across the borders in search of work, food and basic healthcare. Latin American governments initially welcomed them, mindful of Venezuela’s role in taking in those fleeing dictatorships and conflict in the past. But the ballooning exodus this year has stretched social services, created more competition for low-skilled jobs and stoked fears of increased crime.

Wolf cubs in Jutland, Denmark, 2018 Denmark to tag wild wolves after shooting row By News from Elsewhere… …as found by BBC Monitoring These are external links and will open in a new window Image caption Danish scientists filmed wolf cubs in Jutland earlier this year Denmark is to tag its first wild wolf pack in 200 years with GPS trackers, in order to keep tabs on the wolves and protect them from hunters. The government has given Aarhus University permission to tag ten wolves in a catch-and-release scheme, as it is not clear whether some have crossed into Germany, the DR public broadcaster reports. Danes thought their last wolves had died out in the early 19th century, until one was spotted in Jutland six years ago. The female later mated, and Denmark announced last year that it now has a fully-fledged pack . Copenhagen University’s wolf programme, which was set up to monitor the pack, believes the first pair moved to Denmark from the forests of eastern Germany. But the reasons for the tagging are not purely scientific. Environment Jakob Ellemann-Jensen acknowledged that farmers in Jutland are concerned that the wolves are varying their standard diet of deer with the occasional sheep. “The arrival of wolves in Denmark has prompted considerable public concern, and I understand that,” he said, adding that tagging will help scientists learn more about the wolves and “hopefully make Danes feel safer,” the Dagens news site reports. This comes after a member of the public was filmed shooting a wolf dead in May, in a case that caused nationwide outrage.

Bolton said that Russian President Vladimir Putin, who met Trump in Helsinki on July 16, had told the United States that Moscow could not compel the Iranians to leave Syria. “But he also told us that his interest and Iran’s were not exactly the same. So we’re obviously going to talk to him about what role they can play,” said Bolton, who meets his Russian counterpart, Nikolai Patrushev, in Geneva on Thursday. “We’re going see what we and others can agree in terms of resolving the conflict in Syria. But the one prerequisite there is the withdrawal of all Iranian forces back in Iran.” Washington wields leverage in its talks with Moscow because “the Russians are stuck there at the moment,” Bolton said. “And I don’t think they want to be stuck there. I think their frenetic diplomatic activity in Europe indicates that they’d like to find somebody else, for example, to bear the cost of reconstructing Syria – which they may or may not succeed in doing.” The Idlib region, a refuge for civilians and rebels displaced from other areas of Syria as well as powerful jihadist forces, was hit by a wave of air strikes and shelling this month, in a possible prelude to a full-scale government offensive.

Effort to end cash bail in California clears major hurdle in Legislature All others arrested would have to undergo risk analysis, a system that would sort defendants based on criminal history and other criteria into low-, medium- or high-risk categories. Courts would be required to release low-level defendants without assigning bail, pending a hearing. Pretrial services offices would decide whether to hold or release medium-risk offenders. But Republicans and Democrats disagreed over whether the bill would lead to more or less incarcerations, and opponents argued it could result in the release of dangerous offenders. Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer (D-Los Angeles) said those disagreements were signs of compromise. “For me, what we are doing now straddles right down the middle of where we need to go,” he said. Some organizations that have supported the bill from the start remain behind the effort. But other criminal justice reform groups have rescinded their support and are actively working to kill the legislation — landing on the same side as a bail industry that has worked to sink the bill from the beginning. The American Civil Liberties Union became the latest major supporter to move its stance from neutral to opposed on Monday.

Goats seen on a New York City subway track on 20 August 2018 Comedian Jon Stewart rescues goats from New York subway tracks These are external links and will open in a new window Image copyright Metropolitan Transportation Authority Image caption The grazing goats gave police and train staff the runaround For many New Yorkers, a Monday morning subway commute is an experience they’d be delighted to avoid. But it appears nobody’s told the city’s goats. Two of the greedy herbivores briefly disrupted the N line from mid-morning on Monday, when they were spotted roaming the tracks in Brooklyn. The pair were apparently captured with the help of US comedian Jon Stewart and his wife Tracey, who transported them to a nearby animal shelter. Stewart, the former host of The Daily Show, is a long-standing animal welfare activist. He and his wife are supporters of the Farm Sanctuary shelter in upstate New York where the rogue goats were taken in , and have previously adopted an abused horse and a bull that escaped from a slaughterhouse. They also opened a sanctuary at their own New Jersey farm in 2015. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which runs the New York Subway, said it had called the police and Animal Control about the goats, which were spotted on the tracks between the Fort Hamilton and New Utrecht stations. “We’re told they were munching grass,” said Jon Weinstein, a spokesman for the MTA.

Picking Realistic Products Of Washington Post

Attorney weighs insanity defense in newspaper shooting ANNAPOLIS, Md. — An attorney for a man charged with killing five people at The Capital newsroom has asked a Maryland court for more time to consider an insanity defense for his client. William Davis, a public defender, asked the court to find “good cause” to grant an extension of time limitations for his client, Jarrod Ramos. In a court filing this week, Davis cited a Maryland law that requires a plea of not criminally responsible by reason of insanity to be entered at the time the defendant initially pleads “unless good cause is shown.” Davis wrote there are about 800 pages of documents to review, and the material does not include lab reports, witness statements, crime scene photographs and “significant other discoverable information.” “Counsel has neither received, nor had sufficient opportunity, to review, the complete State’s discovery materials, nor has counsel had even the most minimal time to adequately conduct his own independent investigation,” Davis wrote. A spokeswoman for Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams declined to comment. Davis noted that the decision to enter a plea of “not criminally responsible is a fundamental right of the Defendant and can only be made after a complete investigation and meaningful consultation with his attorneys.” “In light of the nature and complexity of this case, the limited defense investigation, and the subsequent requisite consultation with the Defendant, there is clearly good cause for this Court to extend the filing deadlines set forth” in Maryland law, Davis wrote. Ramos, 38, pleaded not guilty July 30. He has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Ann Smith and Wendi Winters in the June 28 attack at the newsroom, where police say he used a shotgun to blast his way inside. He also has been charged with attempted murder, assault and gun crimes. Prosecutors say Ramos carefully planned the attack and barricaded the rear exit of the office to prevent people from escaping.

Legal documents seen by the New York Times were reported to show she paid former co-star Jimmy Bennett $380,000 (£298,000) after he accused her of sexually assaulting him when he was 17. In a statement, she says: “I have never had any sexual relationship with Bennett”. The actress says she strongly denies the contents of the NYT article. Quoting documents exchanged between lawyers for Bennett and Argento, the paper details an incident alleged to have taken place in 2013 in a California hotel room when he had just turned 17 and she was 37. She is alleged to have performed oral sex before engaging in full intercourse with Bennett, a successful child actor and rock musician. The age of consent is 18 in California. Argento was one of the first to speak out against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 70 women. The documents say the alleged encounter traumatised Bennett and threatened his mental health and career, according to the New York Times.
